ABOUT US
GySgt Dale Simmons-COUNTER-SAMBO Courseware Developer
GySgt Simmons was first exposed to the value of Hand-to-Hand combat at the age of nine. From that day forward he swore to become highly proficient in this field.
The formal study he had was one month of Karate: age 10.
His instructor moved away, so he was left to study on his own. He began reading books of all types of self-defense technique available at the library.
He now has amassed well over 500 books on the subject. His first student was his brother. It then progressed to friends and acquaintances. He quickly discovered what did and did not work.
His interest was primarily for combat and self-defense, not for esoteric enlightenment. As the years passed, he continued to expand his daily training regimen and information base.
It also became evident that he was now winning more confrontations in more skillful ways. He began writing papers, and not just reading books about the subject.

Upon entering the Marine Corps, he taught any Marine interested in hand to hand combat since it is a combat skill. In 1978 he discovered the Soviet armed forces had their own killing technique. Using his own interest in science, he was able to systematically analyze then design a technique to counter the Soviet art of SAMBO.
GySgt Simmons believes that COUNTER-SAMBO is a superior combat technique, easily teachable to the average Marine. Its only basis is situational movement efficiency, not form or style. He has designed it for use with a combat backpack. The 23 sections all teach relevant and interrelated concepts to give the combat Marine a maximum opportunity for survival.
The course as it now exists is called level 1. Should the Marine Corps implement this program, GySgt Simmons can design a level 2 and level 3-instructor course. He has taught this course with minimal expenditures (broomsticks, rubber knives, issued weapons, tent line, special services mats, sea bag punching bags etc.)
Many of the level 1 instructors he trained were given an opportunity to return to their units and successfully established their own training programs.
GySgt Simmons feels this is an important point because there were opinions expressed by some that the COUNTER-SAMBO course was “personality dependent”. Therefore you needed GySgt Simmons to teach “his” course. This is not the case.
With lesson outlines, graphic packs and I.S.M. (Individual Standards of Movement) diagrams for the instruction, the course is mobile, flexible in scheduling and easily teachable.
It is his wish to freely share his knowledge to develop a core group of trained instructors to significantly upgrade the skill level of Marines in this field.
GySgt Simmons would be glad to assist any unit in its training objectives.
